’Finding the Philley’
open call: shortlisted 2019
A community rain garden for Bulwer Road, Leytonstone
Finding the Philley will reconnect residents with the lost ‘Philley Brooke’ watercourse via a community rain garden.
A rain garden is an area designed to mitigate small flooding events, something London is increasingly at risk of due to climate change. Rain gardens temporarily hold rain water run-off from roofs, driveways and patios before slowly releasing water into the drainage system. This rain garden will be planted with native shrubs, perennials, and flowers chosen by residents and will remind local people of the underground river that runs beneath their feet.
