Beyond the building and into the local community

Central YMCA, based off Tottenham Court Road, was the world’s first YMCA. Established in 1844, this YMCA branch has a long history in championing the benefits of physical and creative activities to boost mind, body and spirit. However, as life in London changes Central YMCA was challenged with staying relevant.

Our highly collaborative research process explored the current state of health and wellness in London - and looked ahead to how this may change in the future.

Findings helped to inform the internal layout of the Tottenham Court club space, but also how the YMCA could move beyond the building and into the local community. Initiatives including the Eidaimonia well-being campaign have since been developed, and the role Central YMCA plays in the next generation of London’s social innovations is currently evolving.
