‘Morden Hall Soundscape’
UEL showcase 1st Prize, 2019
Using sound to reveal new aspects of Morden Hall Park
When it was built in the 1700s, Morden Hall Park was a place to escape the hustle and bustle of London. Today the park is still used as an escape; in the words of one visitor:
“ I come here to relax and to swap the background
hum of the traffic for the background hum of the stream”
But, had this visitor listened more closely he would have realised that the park offers more than just a tinkling stream. Morden Hall is full of discrete sounds which tell a story of its place within London.
This intervention amplifies the existing sounds and reveals new sounds. This particular location was chosen because it is an intersection where restful park sounds meet active urban noises.
