Connecting a community through food

Thessaly Road Bridge, Battersea marks an important connection point. The underpass can become an inviting place, with the potential to bring people together around a common connection point - food.

Food is integral to Thessaly Road. The road takes its name from the agricultural fields of the Thessaly region in Greece, it sits next to the biggest wholesale market in the UK, and is home to Edible Avenue and the nearby Rose Community Garden providing bounty for the local community. Of course, food is also celebrated as something which bridges communities and connects the multi-layered demographics of London.

And so, local residents will be invited to share their own recipes. These will serve as inspiration; together we will transform the underpass with botanical illustrations and instructions for how to cook and serve the dishes which best represent Thessaly Road’s diverse community. When going through the underpass, locals and visitors will be inspired. Perhaps they will want to add their own contribution, or perhaps they will pick a few herbs from the Edible Avenue - and make a Thessaly Road dish once at home.

There is potential for the Neighbourhood Dish Project to extend beyond Thessaly Road into talks around a dining table during London Festival of Architecture, encouraging different stakeholders and design professionals to meet and discuss new developments and processes both in Battersea and across Greater London.
